{"id":2051,"date":"2011-03-07T20:26:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-07T20:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.pasopacifico.org\/2011\/03\/waves-of-change\/"},"modified":"2024-06-06T14:51:30","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T20:51:30","slug":"waves-of-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pasopacifico.org\/waves-of-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Waves of Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Liza Gonzalez, Paso Pacifico&#8217;s national director, has received a scholarship from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oceanconservancy.org\/\">Ocean Conservancy<\/a> to attend the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.5imdc.org\/\">Fifth International Marine Debris Conference<\/a>\u00a0in Hawaii later this month.<\/p>\n<p>Liza will represent Nicaragua at this annual symposium which brings ocean conservationists together from around the world to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heighten global understanding and appreciation of the threats posed by marine debris, the cost to coastal communities and marine biodiversity, and the sources of marine debris<\/li>\n<li>Highlight recent advances in marine debris research<\/li>\n<li>Encourage sharing of strategies and best practices to assess, reduce, and prevent the impacts of marine debris<\/li>\n<li>Provide an opportunity for the development of collaborative solutions to real problems, including specific bilateral or multi-country strategies<\/li>\n<li>Emphasize the importance of individual behavioural change in preventing marine debris<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Liza is well suited to represent Central American concerns at this conference. A trained ecologist, before she came to Paso Pacifico, Liza helped develop strategies for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/publication\/defining-common-ground-mesoamerican-biological-corridor\">Mesoamerican Biological Corridor<\/a> project and managed all of Nicaragua&#8217;s national parks and protected areas.
