{"id":2043,"date":"2011-05-03T18:17:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-03T18:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.pasopacifico.org\/2011\/05\/the-flip-side-of-tilapia\/"},"modified":"2024-05-01T01:48:17","modified_gmt":"2024-05-01T07:48:17","slug":"the-flip-side-of-tilapia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pasopacifico.org\/the-flip-side-of-tilapia\/","title":{"rendered":"The Flip Side of Tilapia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/02\/science\/earth\/02tilapia.html?pagewanted=1\">New York Times<\/a><\/i> reported on the costs and benefits of factory farmed tilapia and they zoomed in on Nicaragua.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dr. McCrary has spent the past decade studying how a small, short-lived tilapia farm degraded Lake Apoyo in Nicaragua. \u201cOne small cage screwed up the entire lake \u2014 the entire lake!\u201d he said of the farm, which existed from 1995 to 2000.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Waste from the cages polluted the pristine ecosystem, and some tilapia escaped. An aquatic plant called charra, an important food for fish, disappeared, leaving the lake a wasteland.
