Are you writing a thesis or looking for a research project? Our team has brainstormed some ideas for you. Please reach out to Dr. Otterstrom (sarah@pasopacifico.org) with any interest.
We are open to considering the topics below as well as a partnership with any of our projects and focus species. See our Conservation Library for a sample of past published research.
Conduct a follow-up community study on socio-economic conditions in southern Rivas, Nicaragua
This project includes on-site interviews and travel around southern Rivas. Researchers will conduct the study and assess changes from the results of two studies in 2006-2007 and 2011.
Analyze 5+ years of camera trap footage in dry tropical forest
Footage includes a wide variety of species at all times of day and night. There are frequent videos of people and domesticated animals. Most videos are ground level, but some sets are from the canopy.
Analyze wildlife data
Our wildlife data, much recorded along transects, is ripe for analysis. Species include but are not limited to black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) and mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata), and 4 species of sea turtles.
Investigate a 2016 howler monkey die-off
An article from BBC Mundo explains the alarming situation, which fortunately did not continue past 2016. We have observational data and frozen tissue samples currently in Nicaragua. Tissue sample export permits are unavailable.
